Tottenham have exercised the option to extend Heung-Min Son's contract to keep him at the club for an additional 12 months until June 2026.
The South Korea forward and club captain's deal was due to expire in June, meaning Spurs were at risk of losing him on a free transfer at the end of a decade-long spell in north London since signing from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.
Barcelona were one of a number of clubs rumoured to be looking at signing him this summer, but the 32-year-old will now remain at Tottenham for at least another year.
Son has long-since been the top-scoring Asian player in Premier League history and is the third-top scorer of players still active in the competition, behind only Jamie Vardy and Mo Salah.
He has reached double figures in the top flight in each of the last eight seasons and shared the Golden Boot with Salah in 2022, but has found form harder to come by during this campaign, netting only five goals so far and two in his last 11 Premier League appearances.
Son has scored 169 goals in 431 appearances for Spurs in all competitions.
"We are delighted to announce that we have exercised the option to extend Heung-Min Son's contract, which will now run until the summer of 2026," read a statement on Tottenham's website.
Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou also expressed his delight at the news, telling press ahead of his side's Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg tie against Liverpool that the aim is to ensure Son wins a trophy at Spurs.
"He's already had an outstanding career at this football club," Postecoglou said.
"He's played a big role in the last ten years, making an impact at the club and in the Premier League. It's great to extend his stay. The aim and ambition is to make sure he finishes his Tottenham career with some silverware."
Analysis by Sky Sports News' Michael Bridge:
Why did Spurs activate Son's contract for a further year?
Son is one of the most popular players in the dressing room. He's club captain. The club believe he's still got so much to offer.
Was it an easy decision?
As Sky Sports News revealed in September, it was never considered a big issue. The club wanted to keep him and Son wanted to stay.
Any concerns over a mixed season so far?
Son, like so many first-team players, has had several injuries during the season. It's fair to say he's not hit his usual heights so far but let's remember two things. 1. Those heights are at the very top. 2. He turns 33 in July.
Other factors for new deal?
Son will spend well over 10 years at the club. He's adored by fans all over the world. Son's career at Spurs has led to the club being the most supported in South Korea.
Spurs have also signed exciting South Korean winger Yang-Min-hyuk and Son is helping him settle into life in London. New culture, new language.
